Were there ultra-wealthy people in the Soviet Union?

by spiralsandjeremy

The billionaires created by the fall of the Soviet Union and privatization of public industries are notorious. Were there people that wealthy in the Soviet Union? If so, how did they get their wealth and how did people view them in light of the fact that they were living in a communist country?

Okay so hopefully someone will come here with a better answer. The book Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar by Simon Sebag Montefiore answers your question somewhat.

The rich people under Stalin were not rich in how we would understand it in the west, ie they did not have access to money which could be exchanged for goods and services. Rather, they had access to better resources through their connections in the government.

Thus the people at the top of the system, politically, would have access to better food, accommodation, healthcare etc. They got their wealth through controlling political power and having extra resources allocated to themselves.

As to how they were viewed, the book did not get into that. However it did mention one time when Stalin and his entourage stopped to help an old lady who was on the road, she told her sad story and Stalin was touched so he decided to give her some money to help her out. The amazing thing was that NO ONE IN HIS ENTOURAGE HAD CASH ON THEM. This little story illustrates somewhat the condition of the people at the top, who had access to great food and drinks but didn't pay for it how a rich person here would.

Hope that helps. I found the book to be very interesting but only focused on Stalin and his inner circle. It also made the point that this abuse of power by the elites was something that increased over time from the 20s through to the 50s.
