How aware were romans of the decline of their empire by its last few decades?

by BusinessPenguin

i.e. did they write apocryphal literature about Germanic invaders and were there any true efforts to reverse the tide of their decline, or were prominent politicians and generals too absorbed by inner power struggles to see the empire on the Whole was collapsing?

Edit: Specifically I was thinking of the last few decades before the dissolution of the western empire in 476

I might be able to help but it would help if your question was clear about which decades you are talking about.
