Yeager's father was in the business of gas drilling in Hamlin, West Virginia. So saying that Yeager Sr (his name was Albert) ever made bombs is a bit of a semantic stretch. He made explosive charges which were nevessary in the process. ('As a boy, he had helped his father “shoot” gas wells with plastic explosives,' Donald Miller writes).

Of course, what makes a bomb is the purpose of its use. Therefore, since Yeager had the expertise with civilian explosive charges, he was able to utilize it for the benefit of the Maquis. Specifically, 'he was put in charge of explosive fuse devices.'
