In the classic medieval era, we see armies composed of various different types of troops. To specify my question, how uniform were these troops? Would you have a two-handed swordsman fight beside someone with a sword and shield? Were troops assigned what weapons to wield or was it more up to personal choice? How did this change as nations moved towards professional militaries and larger standing armies?
There are a ton of misconceptions popular media pushes about pre-gunpowder combat. There was a discussion about it on the short answer thread two weeks ago, as well as this answer from about a month ago on medieval troop divisions that might get closer to what you're asking.
I covered equipment and fighting formations of Roman/Byzantine armies in the 10th and 11th centuries in this answer: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/6h7rtv/z/diwgg4e
