Why were the techniques of shading, drawing light and perception of view "discovered" during the Renaissance?

by TheSwimmingToast

If an artist sat down to draw something they saw in front of them, they would see shade, reflection of light, and that things that were closer to them appeared bigger. Why wouldn't they attempt to recreate that if they are already making an attempt at recreating color and shape? Even if they are drawing something they aren't looking at (i.e the crucifixion), they can apply those visual concepts to the art.
