Were the botched beheadings of important nobles that the executioner Jack Ketch was famous for deliberate?

If they weren't deliberate and he was really just a terrible executioner then why was he kept as the royal executioner for so long? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Ketch

Jack Ketch would have been responsible for a large number of executions but only a small number of beheadings, where his supposed incompetence lay. Whilst he is known for two botched executions of nobles in 1682 and 1685, the vast majority of his executions would have been hangings. It was said he knew exactly how to tie a rope to ensure a quick or lasting death, or merely to make someone unconscious (and thus potentially cheat death away from the gallows) It could be said that this skill with a rope therefore contributes to why he was employed for so long. It must be said however that he wasnt the only executioner actively employed in London or for the royal family.
