Is there an example of someone being arrested and imprisoned without a trial by jury in colonial America?

by GargoyleSlayer

I have an essay do next week on the grievances in the Declaration of Independence and how they were addressed in the Constitution. One of the grievances I chose was "For depriving us [in many cases] of the benefits of trial by jury" but I can not find a scholarly journal entry or refrence to a time this actually happened. Is there an example you guys know of?

This policy is further explained in this META Thread.

Additionally, while our users may be able to help you out here, we hope that you also will take the time to check out our six-part series, "Finding and Understanding Sources", which should hopefully prove to be helpful for you as you continue in your research.
