I'm looking to build my understanding of Western schooling and education from Plato's Academy through contemporary times in a general sense. I couldn't find any books about schooling and education per se in the sidebar books/resources page (only histories of specific academic disciplines), so I figured I would ask.
Hum... I focus on American education and can't recall a text that covered all of the bases. James Bowen's series, History of Western Education, is probably the most comprehensive but can be hard to locate copies.
I haven't read it myself but The History of Education: The Making of a Discipline (1989) by Gordon and Szreter looks like a good starting point and page 113 lists a number of titles you may find interested or helpful.
Good luck!
