Today we think of Afghanistan as the "graveyard of empires", but Alexander the Great was able to conquer and march through the same region with little apparent trouble. What happened between then and now that led to it becoming so dangerous?

follow up question how did Afghanistan get the name "graveyard of empires"? true the British lost their first war there, but it was hardly a major blow to the empire and the second afghan war went much better. The Russians get a lot of focus as well but it is hard to say that the collapse of the soviet union had anything to do with the situation in Afghanistan.
