If I asked a room full of people, of any age, to draw me a picture of a Pirate- they would all look nearly the same- a derivation of hooks, eyepatches, beards, earrings and gold teeth, black hats with a skull and cross bones, parrots on the shoulders, saying 'Arrrr' while perched on boats with a chests of gold.
Why and when did this become the standard trope of a pirate?
I tried to answer this question before in this very long post: How accurate is the stereotypical depiction of a pirate?
But there is always a lot more to be said. If you have any other specific questions, feel free to ask.
