My great-great uncle, Thurman George, jumped into Normandy as a member of the 82nd Airborne, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, G Company (I couldn't find which battalion.)

I was wondering if y'all had any specific information on the 507th's role (specifically G Company), as part of Operation Neptune. The research I've done has turned up some basic stuff, but nothing major. What kind of specific objectives was his regiment tasked with capturing? Were any men in G Company awarded medals?

Hi,

I am a military historian and author on the 82nd Airborne Division. If your Great-Uncle was G.Company, that makes him 3rd Battalion. The way Parachute Infantry Regiments were structured in WWII was with three Battalions of four Companies. The 1st Battalion had, A, B, C, and a HQ Company, the 2nd Battalion had D,E, F, and a HQ Company, making your Great Uncle third Battalion of the basis of the 3rd being G, H, I, and a HQ Company. He is listed on a roster as being a Sgt.

I can provide you with some indepth detail about what he may have done in Normandy. Feel free to PM me on here or Email aberry@initsys.co.uk

Hello there! As your question is related to looking for information regarding military personnel, our Guide on Military Identification may be of use to you. It provides a number of different resources, including how to request service records from a number of national agencies around the world, as well as graphical aids to assist in deciphering rank, unit, and other forms of badges or insignia. While the users here may still be able to lend you more assistance, hopefully this will provide a good place to start!
