Why did Chili Peppers seemingly never become popular in Europe the way it did in other regions of the world?

If you look at the cuisines of places like India, Thailand, Korea, Mexico and others, spicy food based on the chili pepper became so popular that those cuisines are kinda synonymous with hot, spicy food.

My question is why didn't this similarly happen with European cuisine? From what I can tell, Spicy food never took off in Japan either, at least not the extent it has in nearby Korea.

As far as I can tell, the Red Hot Chili Peppers were actually quite popular in Europe circa their 1990s albums Blood Sugar Sex Majik and One Hot Minute - both albums appear to have charted reasonably highly across Europe, and to have lasted in the charts for some time in several countries.....

Oh wait, you mean the food item not the band! In which case this excellent answer by the excellent /u/sunagainstgold probably has you covered.
