Is There a Complete Listing of Officeholders for Tribune of the Plebs?

by iamthemayor

Wikipedia has a very well organized listing of Roman Consuls. It's a great reference for quickly knowing what year certain texts refer to. Their list of Roman Tribunes, by comparison, is quite the sparsely populated data set. While I understand that Sulla's reign greatly diminished this role (for the plebs), and perhaps it's historical significance, the list doesn't even reach his reign. Is there some sort of compiled list of Roman Tribunes? Is there a well-curated, easily accessible database of Roman bureaucracy?

There's Broughton's The Magistrates of the Roman Republic, which is as accessible and curated as dead trees can get. It includes, by year, every known magistrate until... Actium? 31 BCE? They're listed by year, so you look up a year and you have the magistrates in descending order of rank, including extraordinary magistrates such as dictators. There's a good index and I think (it's been a while since I used it) there are references to things like Pauly so you can look up individual biographies instead of chasing down every year a particular person held office.

The reason the consular list is so complete is that under Augustus a complete list was inscribed - it's called the Fasti Capitolini and it still exists. It was important because if you're dating time by consular year (e.g. "In the year when Caesar and Bibulus were consuls....") you better have some reference for which year that was exactly. Since Rome had by tradition been a Republic for some 500 years by the time this was compiled, undoubtedly some of the earlier names were fabricated so as not to leave gaps, and how many years precisely passed since the establishment of the Republic was debated - Varro has a different chronology than Livy, for instance.

There was no such need to create a list of tribunes. Ten tribunes every year is a lot to keep track of anyway.
