Is there a historical precedent for Catalan's independence movement?

I realise that culturally the area is supposed to be vastly different to the rest of Spain, and that they even have their own language. However what historical precedent (if any) does the area have to justify their movement?

Can you clarify what you mean by "historical precedent?" Unless what you mean is "does Catalonia have a history of independent statehood," I'm not really sure what you're trying to ask.
