On August 3rd 1799, Napoleon secretly sailed back to France with only a few trusted officers, leaving close to 30,000 French soldiers in Egypt with no means of getting home as the Royal Navy under Nelson destroyed the French fleet anchored in Egypt. What happened to the troops that were left in Egypt? Were they rescued later on, absorbed into Egyptian society, or captured by foreign forces?
