What was the relationships between American slave owners & families with their slaves prior to the American Civil War?

Many Americans think of the TV show Roots as the baseline for slavery in America, and yet I’ve read many accounts that many slaves were close to their owners. Just wanted a clearer picture to what the General relationship was like.
