I was looking through the book recommendations because I've realized I don't really know enough about the history of my own country (Argentina) and the other Latin American nations and I wanted to fix that. So I came to see the sub's reading list because it's been a great starting point when I've been curious about other parts of the world, but sadly, I'm unable to find much this time. Would it be too much to ask for some general histories of each Latin American country?
Open Veins of Latin America by Eduardo Galeano is an enthralling book that tells the history of the colonization of Latin America as a whole. A lot of it is very broadstrokes, but It is, in my opinion, one of the best books to put the current state of Latin America into perspective. It is also a history which, at least in the USA, is seldom taught or discussed seriously in schools or in the media.
