Before Alcoholics Anonymous, what treatment options were available for alcoholics, and did any of them work?

There were two recent listings of National Historic Landmarks for the houses of the founders: Stepping Stones and Br. Bob's Home. The nominations made the case that the national program for alcoholism was Prohibition. It not only failed, but it actually facilitated the drinking of hard liquor because it was easier to transport liquor than beer. It also glamourized drinking and widened its appeal for both genders.

The nominations also point out that as Prohibition was failing, Dr. Bob Smith and Bill Wilson met and arrived at the AA program - through a lot of trial and error. The Landmark nominations discussed how the AA option grew out of the failure of the national experiment.
