Why is China a permanent member of the UN security council?

by Skytuu

Russia, the UK, America and France were all apart of the Allies during WW2. Was China also considered a part of the Allies?

Yes! China's Nationalist (KMT) government fought against the Japanese during WW2 and was considered one of the Allies. In fact, China was the most heavily damaged of any of the Allies, surpassing even France; so much so that in the aftermath of WW2, a Communist rebellion was able to (with Soviet support) overthrow the government and install themselves as the new power.

The remnants of the Chinese Nationalist government fled to Taiwan, where they continue to hold power today. They held on to their UN Security Council seat until the early 1970s, when the respective members decided that the KMT was no longer to be considered "China", and the reality was that the Communist government in the Mainland was, in fact, truly "China". Taiwan was forced out of the United Nations, and China got a new representative.
