Why is it only now that artists seem to be able to draw in hyper realism? What was preventing past artists from painting/drawing something that was hyper realistic?

I didn't want to use the word photorealistic as that is a relatively new piece of technology but I am having a hard time understanding how artists during the Renaissance or other periods of artistic advancement were unable or unwilling to paint and draw in methods that were so realistic looking that it looked like real life. Nowadays I feel like I see many artists who are able to make real life pieces of art with minimal tools.
