In today's gospel, Jesus told a parable which struck me as anachronistic. It was about a husband and his ten newly married brides. In the first century CE, did the Jewish community practice polygamy? Would the idea be regarded as socially acceptable?

Do you mean Matthew 25:1-13? Because if that is the story you mentioned, those were Bridesmaids- aids to the bride, her close friends or family.

As for further historical context, all else I know about this story is it was very abnormal for the groom to arrive so late.

More of course can be said, but /u/gingerkid1234 touched on this topic here.
