"The Great War" by Peter Hart. Its a make up of a lot of first hand accounts by the soldiers themselves.

If I may, Lyn MacDonald wrote a series of books that covered the British experience, each book covering a year. Since these create the overall narrative through little individual vignettes, it may well be what you are looking for.
