When did adultery stop being a crime that would be prosecuted in the West?

Was watching a doc on Bernini, and apparently adultery was still a prosecuted crime in the 17th century in Italy, which surprised me. When did it become a thing that wouldn't make it inside of a courtroom in Christendom?

I can't answer your question but I'd like to add that punishment often differed between men and women. In England the Adultery Act of 1650 made adultery by women punishable by death, but male adultery was relayed to the lesser crime of fornication. I'd like to know how long the 'double standard' persisted.
