Where can I find literature or research written during the dutch golden age on art?

by ossa_

Hello, Not sure if this is the correct place to ask this. I am writing an annotated bibliography for a class and my primary source, to support thesis, must be a text written in the Baroque period (c. 1600–1750), and I am having trouble locating one? The university library search I have access to, doesn't seem to turn anything up, how can I go about tracking one down? Any help/ suggestion appreciated.

Simon Schama's The Embarrassment of Riches: An Interpretation of Dutch Culture in the Golden Age deals extensively with the period you outlined. Schama uses a treasure trove of Baroque texts (and art) to discuss Dutch culture, nationality, spirituality, etc. Consulting his primary sources could be a strong launch-point for you, since his analyses are relatively concise (despite the considerable length of the book itself), providing helpful context for the given texts.

Joseph Addison wrote extensively about the Sublime and Beautiful in his essay on The Pleasures of the Imagination in his short lived newspaper the Spectator (1711-1712). Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1690) expounds the idea of Tabula Rasa, blank slate, and began a shift away from a Neoplatonic ethics of ideal forms to a more empirical aesthetic of natural forms. This is why before the 18th century French Gardens were popular (plants grown along artificial geometric lines) and after English Gardens became popular (gardens that mimicked nature).
