Why are relations between Greece and Turkey strained while relations between Romania and Turkey are normal?

by Tramagust

Greece gained independence from the Ottomans in 1832

Romania gained independence from the Ottomans in 1878

Both countries have had conflicts with the Ottomans spanning multiple centuries.

Yet if you look at today's relations Romania has a pretty normal (almost friendly) relationship with Turkey while Greece remained in an adversarial (almost hostile) relationship.

I would have expected the opposite since Romania gained independence half a century after Greece. It is true that Romania was never under direct pashalik control with a pasa and mostly remained a tributary state but there's still a bloody history between Turks and Romanians.

I don’t know the real answer. But can provide you enough perspective. Looking geo-politically; Greek Government is influenced by British government mostly during and after, their independence. Their international treaties had followed British politics mostly. Ottoman Empire signed the Sevr Treaty after WW1. because of that, opposing countries had took their share of soil from it.
12 Islands and some of western regions will soon be claimed by the Greek Government. But the independence and establishment of Republic of Turkey caused these treaties and claims to go off by abolishing the government of Ottoman Empire. (For approx. 2 years; there were 2 government present in the soil of Turkey, the one established Ankara decleared Independence) After that, The countries waged war on R.o.T to claim these soils. In the end, the Greek and Turkish governments’ restrain are caused by their individual‘interests’.

However, as an objective opinion, after Turkey had decleared independence they represented that the Sevr Treaty is cruel and unjust by revealing their rightful soils in ‘Misak-ı Milliye’ which really is a small fraction of the soils that those conqoured by Ottoman Empire. That meant the loss of soils for those who claimed at Sevr. So wars had been waged and Republic of Turkey just defended their soils.
