Does anyone know how I can find more information on my WWII vet grandfather ?

by ThePlatinumPancake

He was a tail gunner on a B-17 and flew 90 missions in the 9th Air Force unit, His name was George A. Yount. I know a few of his stories from my dad but my grandfather died long before I was born and I’d like to learn more about him and his time in the service, is there any resources that I could use to find information?

Give a call to the personnel department at USAF HQ. They should be able to dig up some info as far as awards/units are concerned.

Hello there! As your question is related to looking for identification/information regarding military personnel, our Guide on Military Identification may be of use to you. It provides a number of different resources, including how to request service records from a number of national agencies around the world, as well as graphical aids to assist in deciphering rank, unit, and other forms of badges or insignia. While the users here may still be able to lend you more assistance, hopefully this will provide a good place to start!
