Topics Relating to WW1

by Kayfore

Hi guys,

For school I have to do a huge project this year where I get to choose a topic and then research and write a ton about it. You are expected to put atleast 80 hours of work into.

So I've obviously been thinking about things that interest me but have been having trouble coming up with a concrete topic to research. I was thinking of doing it about WW1, maybe something having to do with the causes for WW1 or maybe about the failures of the Austro Hungarian army.

Do you have any good ideas for a topic?

Some examples of topics done by last years students are: "What effect did the Franco-Prussian war have on WW1"
"How comparable is Trump to Hitler" (Title is a bit clickbaity, it focused a lot on the similarities between modern america en 1930's germany)
"To what degree is Russia actually a democracy"

It'd be great if you could help me out!

I can't really answer this for you, and no one here really can either. There's a stupid amount of things to write about in WW1, and it's really just what interests you that matters. You already have a couple of topics, though they're a little broad, you could go with either, or a different one.

In lieu of that, I will like you two things

First, this brief guide to doing research by the illustrious /u/mikedash, and this six part guide to finding and employing historical sources. The booklist over in the sidebar also has a load of good stuff in it too once you get into more specific stuff.

Does Canada's involvement in WW1 interest you? I'm a bit bias but the Second battle of Ypres and also one of the Canada's biggest accomplishments in WW1 the battle of Vimy Ridge. Both battle are huge in Canadian history and had huge effects on the outcome of the war but are overlooked mostly in American textbooks last time I heard.
