Did Dante’s Inferno influence our thinking of hell and if so how?

I remember reading somewhere that Dante’s inferno influenced modern Catholicism’s perception of hell and I was wondering how accurate that statement is and if so how? Also did Dante’s inferno influence society and if so how?
