Today:
Welcome to this week's instalment of /r/AskHistorians' Sunday Digest (formerly the Day of Reflection). Nobody can read all the questions and answers that are posted here, so in this thread we invite you to share anything you'd like to highlight from the last week - an interesting discussion, an informative answer, an insightful question that was overlooked, or anything else.
I’d like to thank /u/mikedash for giving me an excellent answer on the hoopla surrounding the famed Man in the Iron Mask!
And while not exactly within the past week (more like… 3…) I’d also like to give my thanks to /u/yodatsracist for answering my question on why Senator Barry Goldwater seemed racist, yet did very profound non-racist acts.
And although this one kinda (well, pretty much definitely) goes beyond the scope of Sunday Digests, I stumbled upon /u/profrhodes’ summary on why the Cubans intervened in the Angolan Civil War, which he wrote up nearly 4 years ago. It’s a phenomenal summary on such an esoteric topic (in fact, the best explanation I’ve been able to find anywhere so far), and I think it deserves some visibility!
/u/drylaw took the words out of my mouth on the topic of Africans in Colonial Mexico
/u/sowser wrote an extensive and fascinating response to I really enjoyed the Roots remake but a friend recently told me that a lot of the story is made up and that the author stole from fiction writers. is this true? What do historians of that time period think about Roots?
/u/MisterMarcus answered a question I asked three weeks ago about Ross Perot in the 92 and 96 elections.
/u/gm6464 on "How involved was the North in antebellum Southern cotton farming?"
/u/bigglesworth_ on "Great Escape from Stalag III-E"
u/thefourthmaninaboat answered why couldn't or didn't John Fisher (highest ranking officer in the british navy 1904-1910) fire Charles Beresford for insubordination during their "feud"
u/kieslowskifan wrote a first rate answer on travel between East and West Berlin during the cold war in Berlin Wall! plz inform if this post is already here somewhere
I wrote about population and occupation statistics in What percentage of UK's population before Industrial Revolution worked in an occupation related to agriculture and what percentage afterward?
Hello, I am looking to answer more History of Math questions, so if anyone knows of any that went unanswered before, please link me! I set up a google alert, I hope it will work.
