I’m generally interested, as a lay person, in the late British Empire, and especially in its involvement in Africa and Asia. How good of a job (accuracy + engaging style) does *Go to Your God Like a Soldier” do in presenting the British soldiers experiences during this time period? Do you have any other good recommendations?
For additional reading if you are interested in the direct experiences and outlook of the enlisted soldier rather than officers you might find the diary of Corporal John Ryder of the 32nd Regiment of Foot (32nd Cornwall Light Infantry) enlightening.
It has been published several times as:
Four Years Service in India: or as
A Leicestershire Soldier in the Second Sikh War, Recollections of a Corporal of the 32nd Regiment of Foot in India.
It gives an interesting view on how harsh the conditions were for the individual soldier.
Despite the Regiment's reference to Cornwall, it enlisted broadly in England and also from Ireland.
