Which non-fiction books would you recommend about British history from 1066 to the Tudor era?

by coaxialology

Apologies for the broad timeline, but I’m open to suggestions for books on just about anything - historical figures, religion, culture, daily life.

Any popular British or history-based subreddit recommendations appreciated as well. I can’t keep pestering the kindly respondents at r/AskABrit.

Hello - To start with, the best overview books covering your period are from the Penguin History of England. They would be Carpenter, Struggle for Mastery (covering c. 1060-1297) and Rubin, Hollow Crown (1307-1485). The book covering the end of the Roman Rule to 1066 by Robin Fleming is also very good, and does a significant amount of work with archaeology (Britain after Rome). More popularly oriented books covering the medieval period are by Dan Jones, The Plantagenets and Wars of the Roses.

Works covering the late medieval church are Swanson, Church and Society in Late Medieval England, Bernard The Late Medieval English Church and Duffy, Stripping of the Altars. For works on the monarchs of England, the books in the Yale English Monarchs series are typically very good. Bolton, Medieval English Economy and Dyer, Making a Living in the Middle Ages are good works on the English medieval economy.

If there is a topic you would like more information on, I would be happy to suggest something.
