I've recently found a copy of SPQR in my university's library and become fascinated with it. In addition to being a good read, Beard seems to engage with primary sources well and presents multiple viewpoints of important events. That being said I'm interested in hearing what mainstream historians think of the work as it is clearly designed for the general public and so may miss some of the nuance that academic works have.
