Looking for memoirs from the Spanish Civil War written by Spaniards

by dominnic

I've been interested in learning about the Spanish Civil War lately and I was wondering if someone could recommend some books. I read Homage to Catalonia a long time ago, but now I'm interested in reading memoirs from that time by Spaniards, not foreigners who came to Spain to fight.

More specifically, I'm looking for eyewitness accounts of events in the Second Republic, including but not limited to the war years, and also memoirs written by Spanish republicans after 1939, either living in Spain or abroad. I'd prefer English translations if those are available, but I'm also open to books in Spanish.

I would definitely recommend "Blood of Spain: An Oral History of the Spanish Civil War" by Ronald Fraser. Just what it says on the label, recollections, recorded in the '70s, from several hundred Spaniards who lived through the conflict, providing a wide array of experiences and perspectives. Not a standalone memoir, but it is just what you're looking for I think.

Ive got "así destruyó Carrillo el PCE" which (partly) deals with the war. It's written by a Communist Party member who went to become a general against fascists in the Republic and late against the nazis in the USSR, Enrique Líster. He was very pro USSR and disliked Carrillo, the communist leader during the transition. He even went to found the split Partido Comunista Obrero Español.
