Vasco da Gama was the first European to reach India by sea, which is considered significant because it opened up trade routes for spices and other luxury goods between India and Europe which didn't go through the Muslim controlled Ottoman Empire. However, we have records of Europeans travelling to India and other parts of Asia over land for centuries before da Gama.
