Some German POWs were kept in the USSR for decades. What was Soviet society's attitude toward these prisoners?

I can't answer the general thrust of your question, but I did want to note a small correction: the last German POWs left the Soviet Union in 1956, so they weren't there for decades. The World Peace Foundation at The Fletcher School at Tufts University has a short paper online with statistics and information about German POWs.
