Theory Thursday | Academic/Professional History Free-for-All

by AutoModerator

Previous weeks!

This week, ending in December 14 2017:

Today's thread is for open discussion of:

  • History in the academy

  • Historiographical disputes, debates and rivalries

  • Implications of historical theory both abstractly and in application

  • Philosophy of history

  • And so on

Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion only of matters like those above, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

Are there any good introduction books to historiography in general?

JFK in particular?

Thank you

I just found this subreddit and I think it might be my best bet for getting an answer to something I've often wondered about. What would North America and the world would look like had European settlers not come to the new world? What would the nations look like had the indigenous people been left to develop? I don't know nearly enough history to theorize accurately and I wonder if people smarter than me have ever given it any thought.

Who are some currently-active Marxist historians I should look into?
