I have been doing original research into the American media and public reaction to ping-pong diplomacy for the past few months for a history workshop course at my university. One of my main sources for gauging public reaction and how ping-pong diplomacy affected the attitude of Americans towards the PRC was public opinion polling. Up until this afternoon, I had not come across any other scholarly that used this public opinion polling in the context of the public's reaction to ping-pong diplomacy, but it had been used in other academic work as a barometer for the American public's attitude towards Communist China. I have other sources for looking at the public's reaction, such as letters to the editor and some contemporaneous interviews of members of the public, but I want to have another type of primary source to gauge the reaction of the American public. Would y'all have any suggestions?
Is it possible to dig up online newspapers(they’re quite readily accessible) to see what the Journalists were writing, and how they wrote it? I’d definitely start from there :)
