Today:
Welcome to this week's instalment of /r/AskHistorians' Sunday Digest (formerly the Day of Reflection). Nobody can read all the questions and answers that are posted here, so in this thread we invite you to share anything you'd like to highlight from the last week - an interesting discussion, an informative answer, an insightful question that was overlooked, or anything else.
/u/Bodark43's answer to the question How were the tiny parts in mechanical watches machined and made with such precision at a small size in the era between the 1500s and the early 1800s?. A fascinating exploration of pre-industrial craftsmanship!
I really liked /u/artfulorpheus' and /u/PeddaKondappa2's answers to Why did Jainism and Buddhism mostly die out in India under Islamic rule? Why was Hinduism the faith that flourished?
I'm sad that r/AskHistorians/comments/7k7qah/what_proves_that_the_kings_of_rome_are_only hasn't received an answer yet. I've got the distinct impression an overzealous Wikipedia editor has been injecting the word 'legendary' a bit too freely, but I can't be sure since I don't know what the latest research on the topic is. Could a good flair help rid us of this confusion?
/u/shashank1000 answered "How did the Education System (primary, secondary, tertiary and vocational) in the USSR compare to the education offered in western countries like Britain and America during a similar period? (1922-1991)"
/u/Rob-With-One-B on "How realistic were the Sharpe books,by Bernard Cornwell, in portraying the reasons the French lost the Peninsula war in Spain to the British?"
/u/bristoneman answered "Why were some early medieval states larger than ones that came directly after them?"
I'd like to thank /u/hillsonghoods for answering my question on how Elvis Presley's enlistment in the Army may have affected operations in his unit. Having seen favoritism at play in modern US units myself, I couldn't have imagined what possible effects having literally Elvis in a unit may cause.
I'd also like to thank /u/integral_grail for clarification on how exactly the Nazis claimed the Jews "stabbed" Germany in the back during WWI. I've read plenty of the Nazis blaming the Jews, but never really knew why.
