Gen McArthur depended heavily on Australian ground forces during his campaigns in the SW Pacific area. RAN ships also served with the USN in the Pacific throughout the war. HMAS Canberra was sunk alongside 3 USN cruisers at Savo Island. The (arguably) first victim of a kamikaze attack was HMAS Australia.
