If you're a practicing a Christian or a practicing Muslim, regardless of your credentials, I'm inclined to assume your views on the historicity of Jesus are deeply biased.Do you think that's a bad approach (as a laymen) to take to studying western religious history?

It is a bad approach since you are injecting your own bias into your evaluation of their scholarship. You aren't basing your judgement of their ideas on fact and evidence but rather on a personal belief that Christians and Muslims are incapable of conducting competent research.
