When and where did street naming and numbering begin?

I've always wondered this since most of the world uses the same street naming format.

In the book “l’italia Degli anni mille” and “l’Italia dei secoli d’oro” of Roberto gervaso and Indro Montanelli which explain Italy during 1000-1492 explains that Venice was the first in Europe for placing house numbers to palaces. This is because of the nature of Venice itself, due to the fact that buildings didn’t follow roads that proclaimed a profession or it was way to hard indicating directions to foreigners (which sort of embassies in the city like the building next to the ponte di rialto which during the renaissance housed Germans). Heck, even now one can get lost, even with maps. I’m not sure for the world due to the fact that China might have had numbers for houses even before (though it is unlikely that they influenced each other as Venice at least had a necessity for such a nomenclature even without China) regarding roads I honestly couldn’t tell due to the fact that most roads gained their names due to the profession or characteristics of the inhabitants of that road. The earliest example of named roads are the famous Roman roads like the appian road. Feel free to ask any questions
