Are there any decent English language books which provide an overview of the Lebanese Civil War? I've been wanting to do some more in-depth reading on it, but much of what I've found deals mainly with Israel's involvement.
I haven't read it, but you might want to try Robert Fisk's Pity the Nation: Lebanon at War.
I wish I had a good civil war recommendation, hopefully somebody here will provide one, but I can definitely recommend the book “Hezbollah” by Augustus Richard Norton. Its a very compact and readable history of the organization that covers the Civil War in at least some detail (ofcourse its from the Shia perspective, not a broad look at the conflict). It has been very positively reviewed by scholars in the West and in the Middle East.
I'd take anything Robert Fisk writes that mentions Israel with a pound of salt, but if you want to read his book Pity the Nation, it could probably be balanced by Itamar Rabinovich's The War for Lebanon, 1970–1985 (he's an Israeli, but in general just a fantastic military historian, who could provide balance to Fisk). I've heard Edgar O'Ballance's Civil War in Lebanon, 1975–92 is decent for a quick overview, but I haven't read it myself.
