I think Robert Middlekauf's The Glorious Cause is the best general overview of the American Revolution. I typically end up reading it once a year. It's heavily weighted toward politics and military matters, but it doesn't skimp on its discussion of social issues or ideas. Jon Ferling's Whirlwind is also a good overview for the general reader.
