Hi! It’s Christmas season, and I’m looking for a good gift to give myself. I’ve been interested in Napoleonic wars and the man in general for a while now, and was wondering if any of the historians here had any suggestions for really good, comprehensive books on that time period. Thanks in advance!
I have only read a few books on the man and the war, but I can certainly suggest those. If you are interested in what Napoleon himself had to say, I suggest Jay Luvaas's Napoleon on the Art of War. Luvaas carefully prepared much of Napoleon's writings into a concise collection. If you are looking for a more detailed military history, I would suggest The Background of Napoleonic Warfare: The Theory of Military Tactics in Eighteenth-Century France by Robert Quimby. Hope you find what you are looking for.
Hey there,
Have you taken a look at our reading list? https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/wiki/books/europe#wiki_the_french_revolution_.26amp.3B_the_napoleonic_wars
I can personally recommend The Campaigns of Napoleon, it's very good, if a bit of a tome.
