There is actually a section in the FAQ on the Holodomor that may help answer your question. On the downside, I do notice that the responses linked there are actually rather old, so there's ample room for more contributions.

There are also a lot of questions on the topic if you search for "Holodomor". This one seems to have some good discussion and is more recent than those in the FAQ. /u/TenMinuteHistory had a good response in that thread that, if I'm reading it correctly, essentially says that Stalin's policies lead to millions of deaths, but were not specifically meant to be ethnic cleansing.
