I’m reading a lot of Jane Austen right now and there are many references to men being in the navy. What was daily life aboard the ships? Were sailors respected on land, or did it all depend on rank? What was the difference like between officers and sailors who didn’t have a rank? If you were in a high station in society, were you pretty much guaranteed to become an officer?
Thanks Historians!
