Can you recommend some books that discuss how ordinary people in history lived their day to day lives?
This is a very broad question, what period are you most interested in learning about?
It isn't a book and I hope my non-scholarly answer will be forgiven since this isn't a factual question, but there's a documentary series called Terry Jones' Medieval Lives (it's hosted by the ex-Python, but it's not a comedy or anything) that's quite entertaining. Take it with the same grain of salt you'd apply to any pop history, but it's still entertaining and at least based on real scholarly history.
The Beauty and the Sorrow: An intimate History of the First World War. It is a chronological piece, following the lives of several people during an amazingly tumultuous time. The biographies are taken from journals from a seemingly random collection of folks, somewhat mundane and certainly not epic in each story, but you see the individual upsets that create a sweeping epic like a world at war. I cannot recommend it enough as a view into ordinary lives in extraordinary times.
There used to be a series of books entitled The Everyday Life of... and it would cover Medieval peoples or other time periods. Interesting, but it doesn’t really focus on individuals per se.
If you’re cool with French history, and are interested in how historians “recreate” the history of ordinary people as well as what that history looks like, try Natalie Zemon-Davis’s The Return of Martin Guerre or Alain Corbin’s Le Monde Retrouvé de Louis-François Pinagot (I swear it exists in English; I just can’t remember the title). May be a little beyond your interests, but very approachable and relevant books.
Hesiod's "Works and Days", although quite sensationalized and with a fair bit of mythology.
There is a Great Courses lecture series titled, “The Other Side of History: Daily Life in the Ancient World,” by a professor Robert Garland. It attempts to focus on the lives of average people in Western civilizations, including slaves and women.
Chris Bambery's A People's History of Scotland is a pretty good compilation of the trials and triumphs of the Scottish people over centuries
