I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good book or three on the Yugoslav Wars, and especially on how the specifics of the Dayton Accord were worked out. I'm specifically interested in how the precise final borders were decided on, and how rump Yugoslavia influenced the outcome and felt about it.
I'd also be happy to get recommendations for books about Yugoslavian history in general, but my particular interest is the Dayton Accord.
I highly recommend The Myth of Ethnic War: Serbia and Croatia in the 1990s by Chip Gagnon as a way to understand the dynamics of the conflict from the breakup of Yugoslavia to Dayton. He’s written a few articles about post-Dayton Bosnia as well, but the general idea of the book is to examine the war through the lens of politicians’ desire for power and the machinations of elite actors in contrast to the way it is typically depicted as ethnic conflict and in a way that’s really enlightening.
