Question about working men’s clothing in the 19th and early 20th centuries

by rainsummerrain

In shows like Downton Abbey, Peaky Blinders, old West shows, etc. You often see working men with a sort of tie or something on their upper arm on their shirt. My fiancé and I can’t find anything on the internet about it. Was this sort of style or was there a reason for this? What is/was it called?

I don't know if this is actually the right subreddit for this question, but do you mean a sleeve garter?
