Most drugs in the United States have doses based on the metric system (specifically mg, mL, and mcg). How were drugs accurately dosed in the United States before the metric system became commonplace?

I'm sharing this in case others were wondering, as I was, what an "mcg" is. It's a microgram, normally abbreviated as μg. Looking this up, I learned that in the United States it is recommended to be written as "mcg" for medical communication.
